What are NDIS forensic services?

Understanding the need for NDIS Forensic Services

We know that every individual accessing NDIS funding has unique needs and requires individualized support. When these needs intersect with complexities through forensic and mental health, we understand that many NDIS service providers are not well equipped to provide this support to participants.

At Hope Circle, our disability support workers have the training and experience to provide supports and services for NDIS participants who are subject to community corrections orders, home detention (ankle monitoring), parole orders and supervised treatment orders, as well as those with co-occurring disorders.

At Hope Circle, we encourage our staff and support workers to see the person and not the mental health condition or the drug use or crime; recognizing differences between their disability and any reason/s for justice system involvement.

Our individualized services wrap around the whole person, providing a holistic view of support needs.

Key components of NDIS Forensic Services

At Hope Circle, we have found that there are five key components that make up NDIS forensic services in supported independent living, in-home and community support.

Whether the NDIS participant is living in SIL or in community, our disability support workers and office-based support team adapt our usual services to embed these key components into our delivery of disability support services.

These components are:

  1. Behaviour support and management: working with behaviour support professionals with behaviour support plan implementation. As an implementing provider of regulated restrictive practices, we support the NDIS participant through the restrictive practices and, over time, work with stakeholders to trial and implement reductions or elimination of the restrictive practices.
  2. Legal and corrections coordination: we support participants to attend corrections appointments, court hearings, meet CTO (Community Treatment Order) requirements and liaise with their lawyer.
  3. Mental health support: we assist NDIS participants with attending their medical appointments, including mental health, forensic mental health, psychological support and counselling.
  4. Therapeutic interventions: supporting clients with therapy appointments and interventions is usually related to disability; but disability support workers may also assist with supporting the participant to engage with other agencies who support drug and alcohol rehabilitation.
  5. Transition support: through our supports and services, we assist NDIS participants with their reintegration into community, rehabilitation and ongoing monitoring with relevant stakeholders.

Whilst it’s not necessarily Hope Circle’s role to provide these kinds of services, we work to help the NDIS participant to access the circle of supports around them who do provide these services in order to help them to live the life they want.

Hope Circle approach to NDIS forensic services

We are able to support forensic clients to access housing or accommodation as part of our service delivery. You can contact us to find out more about this which can include short term accommodation or medium term accommodation.

Our disability support workers liaise closely in supporting NDIS participants to meet their requirements and achieve their goals. This may include reintegration in community and with family/friend circles, as well as meeting parole or justice system requirements.

We support and affirm the individual’s identity and purpose as part of their reintegration in community, providing a protective factor against reoffending.

At Hope Circle, we don’t stigmatise substance abuse and we work proactively with organisations who support drug and alcohol rehabilitation, community mental health and Aboriginal health services, recognizing that each person’s journey is unique.

From Hope Circle’s office-based support staff, our experienced Service Coordinators and other staff provide guidance and oversight, including available 24/7 on call support.

Conclusion

At Hope Circle, we understand the different components of NDIS forensic services. Our team has training and experience to support clients navigating their own journey in accessing the supports needed to live the life they want.

We are passionate about instilling hope for our clients and shaping their positive future to live the life they want.
