Hope Circle’s NDIS Forensic Services Approach

Our experience includes supporting NDIS participants with intellectual and cognitive disabilities and a range of forensic histories who are engaged in the criminal justice system, or are at risk of engagement.

We specialise in supporting NDIS participants who are subject to community corrections orders, home detention (ankle monitoring), parole orders and supervised treatment orders, as well as those with co-occurring disorders. There are differences in providing supports for normal SIL vs NDIS forensic services.

Our tailored individual services include NDIS participants with legal involvement, including those in detention facilities, in remand, or under court orders with conditions like travel limitations and treatment compliance. We aim to reduce the risk of reoffending and promote better community inclusion.

At Hope Circle, we work alongside mental health and forensic mental health professionals, correctional services, support coordinators, allied health providers, family/guardian and other stakeholders providing tailored supports to participants.

Our staff work with NDIS participants to identify strategies to reduce behaviours of concern, increase community inclusion and engagement, and live independently.

Given the importance of collaboration, we work in partnership with medical, mental health and behaviour support professionals to encourage participants to actively participate in their community.

NDIS Forensic Services FAQs

At Hope Circle, we have found that there are five key components that make up NDIS forensic services:

  1. Behaviour support and management: working with behaviour support professionals and as an implementing provider of regulated restrictive practices.
  2. Legal and corrections coordination: supporting participants to attend corrections appointments, court hearings, CTO (Community Treatment Order) requirements and liaise with their lawyer.
  3. Mental health support: including psychological support and counselling.
  4. Therapeutic interventions: therapies not only related to disability; but also may include drug and alcohol interventions.
  5. Transition support: reintegration into community, ongoing monitoring and rehabilitation.

Whilst it’s not our role to provide all of this, we work to help the NDIS participant to access the circle of supports around them who do provide these services.

If you have a disability and are involved in the justice system, then you have the same rights as anyone else to apply for the NDIS.

You can apply for the NDIS at any time and we would suggest you do so even if/while you are in custody. That way, if you are eligible, you can start receiving your supports ahead of release and have those continue to support you to re-engagement in the community.
